What will my first Massage session be like?

Every treatment is different but most therapists do have a basic routine that you can expect to experience for your first appointment. Normally, you will begin in a face-down position. Your therapist will massage your back, shoulders and neck, and the backs of your legs. Then they will have you turn over on to your back and will massage the front of your legs, your arms, and end with your head, neck and face. However, this routine can easily be changed to fit your needs.

Will I have to be completely undressed?

We always tell our clients to undress to their comfort level. Some people are comfortable taking everything off, others prefer to keep their undergarments on. Occasionally we have clients who choose to leave their socks on, as well, or keep clothing on areas that we are not working.

Will the practitioner be present when I disrobe?

In almost every case, we will NOT be in the room while you disrobe. Exceptions can be made if a client has physical issues that make dressing/undressing difficult. In all other cases, we will leave the room until you are undressed and covered by the blanket on the table.

Will I be covered during the session?

Yes. New York State law requires sensitive areas to be covered at all times. At Evolve, we take it one step further and require nothing less than a sheet to be used. Usually, you will have a blanket and sheet to cover with, and your therapist will only undrape the areas being massaged. If you ever feel exposed, please do not be afraid to let us know. We will make sure you are comfortable!

Will massage hurt?

Traditional Swedish Massage is usually not uncomfortable, as our goal is relaxation. However, in problems areas, or areas that are already tight or recovering from injury, the sensation may be more intense. Deep Tissue can sometimes be uncomfortable, especially in problem areas, but you are always in control on the pressure used. If it feels like it is too much, just let your therapist know and they will adjust the pressure. Sometimes you will be sore after a massage, but your therapist will provide you with some tips on how to avoid this before your session is over.

What type of massage is right for me?

If your goal is relaxation, we recommend scheduled your massage as a Swedish. If pain-management is your objective, schedule a Deep Tissue. If you have never had a massage, it will probably be better to schedule a Swedish. We can always change it after our initial consultation.

How will I feel after the massage or bodywork session?

Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days.

What are the benefits of massage and bodywork?

Massage and bodywork can help release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue, improve posture, and reduce blood pressure. Massage and bodywork is also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety and create an overall sense of well-being.

Are there any medical conditions that would make massage or bodywork inadvisable?

Yes. There are many situations that would make massage inadvisable. Before your session you will be given a health history form. Please fill it out honestly and to the best of your knowledge. If you have a condition that you think may not allow for massage therapy, please ask before scheduling. We are happy to answer any questions, and it is better to be safe than sorry. Some examples of conditions that require caution during massage include: 1st Trimester of Pregnancy, Lymphedema, Lymph Node Removal, Acute Injury, Headcolds, Influenza or Fever.
